RIPPL IN HEALTHCARE

Employee Engagement in Healthcare

Our critical frontline heroes that make up the healthcare sector connect millions of people with essential services from routine check-ups to life-saving treatments. Whilst those on the frontline were outwardly praised throughout the COVID-19 pandemic for their incredible work and dedication, the industry’s workforce has faced significant barriers as it’s navigated its recovery since. Limited resource and over-stretched teams face heightened risk of burnout and poor wellbeing, contributed to by poor recognition and compensation, leading the sector to face growing turnover rates – a challenge only growing steeper as demand for healthcare services are expected to increase.

So, how can healthcare industry employers meaningfully empower and reward their frontline teams? We explore widening gaps in many of the sector’s existing People strategies, and how businesses can proactively address these to ensure every healthcare employee feels valued, heard and seen in their roles.

Why employee engagement is important in Healthcare

So, what are the key barriers employers within the Healthcare industry need to address to restore connection and empower every healthcare hero?

  • Over-stretched, under-valued teams. Nearly two-thirds of healthcare employees feel overworked in their roles as resources become increasingly tightened. 40% of teams believe they are unrecognised at work, yet 54% report they’d be inspired to boost productivity at work if given meaningful recognition. With demand on healthcare services only expected to increase, the implications of under-resourced and overlooked employees are becoming increasingly magnified.
  • Deskless, hard-to-reach workforce. The nature of the Healthcare industry means most employees are in frontline, operational roles, often with no access to a corporate email address or device, blocking consistent communication and engagement routes. Plus, with diverse shift patterns, another key barrier to effective engagement is maintaining connection with all team members – research shows 53% of deskless workers globally lean on personal messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to bridge this gap themselves.
  • Heightened burnout and wellbeing risk. Research led by the UK NHS found over a third of employees within the healthcare industry feel burned out at work, often caused by long and demanding shift patterns with inadequate resource and wellbeing support, resulting in growing risk to the wellbeing of those working in frontline healthcare services.
  • Increased employee turnover. CIPD 2023 data shows staff turnover in the healthcare industry to be around 28%. Of course, this accounts for the many diverse workplace settings across the sector, from hospitals to care homes, but the rate still sits much higher than the UK average of 16%. And over the last 5 years, it’s predicted the average hospital has turned over 100% of its staff.
